My most satisfying paintings come out of a struggle between freedom and control - between creation and destruction in that imagery is both adhered to and departed from. Ideally the work becomes symbolically charged so that imagery, though important, is transformed or subsumed by the process of making a painting. It is in the language of the paint itself and the evidence of mortal struggle in making the imagery my own that the true nature of this work is felt.
